Who can notarize in Alberta
Alberta lawyers and students-at-law are notaries by virtue of their office, under the Notaries and Commissioners Act.
Others can apply to Alberta Justice for a notary appointment (18 or older, Alberta resident, Canadian citizen or permanent resident, no criminal record); applying does not guarantee an appointment.
A notary can
- Certify true copies of documents.
- Witness the signing of documents.
- Everything a commissioner for oaths can do.
Good to know
- Alberta Justice appoints notaries but does not offer notary services itself.
Commissioner of oaths or notary? A commissioner for oaths can swear affidavits and declarations but can’t act as a notary (no certified true copies, no notarized signatures), and commissions documents in and for Alberta only. Which do you need?
